Dorothy Bottos

Democratic Candidate

For State Representative District 28

I would like to first thank you for your past support; and announce that I'm running again for this position, to still maintain that all constituents should get equal representation, not a select few. This site will be making some changes in a few weeks. I look forward to seeing many old friends and making many new friends out on the campaign trail.

I have filed with the State Party effective 12/28/07.

Dorothy Bottos

Biography

Hello! My name is Dorothy Bottos and I am a Democrat, running for Texas State Representative, District 28. I am asking for your vote on November 4. I feel that I am the right choice for you for 2008.

First let me tell you a little about myself. I grew up on a farm in South Texas in a middle income family. I am number nine in a family of ten children. My family and I interacted in the community, our school, our church and of course with each other. Education was always important. Even though my parents had only a grade school level education,  my siblings and I all graduated from the same high school and all went on to college.

I attended Southwest Texas State College in San Marcos , Texas , where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Teaching was one of the few job opportunities a woman could go into back in the 60’s, so I became a teacher. My interests back then were not in politics but fashion; clothing and textiles; and foods and nutrition. I taught subjects related to these areas in public school, junior college and, at the University of Houston where I have post baccalaureate hours.

Between the teaching years, I worked for Simplicity Pattern Company out of New York City , New York . My job with Simplicity involved traveling across the United States doing fashion presentations and it was this position that brought me to Houston and eventually to teach at the University. Several years later I became a small business owner of a specialty arts and crafts shop for approximately 10 years.

Houston is where I met my husband Richard, who is a professional engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering. We have been married for 30 years and have a daughter, Daphne. She is a graduate of Waller High School and a graduate of Sam Houston State University with double degrees in Journalism and Radio and Television.

We moved to Hockley , Texas , approximately 14 years ago from Houston and bought our house without knowing anyone or knowing anything about Waller County . Settling into life in the country was a new experience for Dick and Daphne but to me, it was like coming home.

It did not take long to meet people and become a part of the Waller County community. Because Daphne was going into the sixth grade, school became the first adventure. I attended a Parent Teacher Organization meeting before that school year started and left the meeting as the officer in charge of fundraising. Later I became the President of the high school PTO; and was asked and ran for a school board position of the Waller Independent School District .

Loving the arts, I joined the Art League shortly after moving to Waller County . At one time, I was the President of this organization, along with holding other offices. I have also served on the Board of Directors for the Hempstead Chamber of Commerce.

Politics entered my life sometime during all of the above. I served as President of the Waller County Democratic Club for two years; then became the Waller County Democratic Chair, serving for approximately nine years before resigning this past year. I also served one term as Senatorial District 18 Executive Committeewoman for the Texas Democratic Party. These political positions opened up my life to politics at all levels.

I have been a leader. I have been a candidate. I have helped elect candidates. I have been involved in county issues. I know how county government works. I know how our state government works. I have seen many things that I have not liked and I have seen things that I would like to change. So, I have decided to run for this office to try and make a difference in the lives of the people in District 28.
